Cef-RX Cef-RX
Ingredient

Each 1 ml suspension contains:

  • Ceftiofur Hydrochloride ........... 100 mg
  • Solvent and Distilled Water (qs) .......... 1 ml
(Oily vehicle, Medium-Chain Triglycerides, Cottonseed Oil)
Uses

Treatment of respiratory diseases in pigs, including:

  • Porcine pleuropneumonia (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae)
  • Pasteurellosis (Pasteurella multocida)
  • Polyserositis pneumonia (Haemophilus parasuis)
  • Streptococcal infections (Streptococcus suis)
Pharmacological properties

Ceftiofur is a third-generation cephalosporin with a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect. It inhibits bacterial growth and division by preventing bacterial cell wall synthesis.

In pigs: Ceftiofur is effective against Gram-positive pathogens such as Clostridium perfringens, Cl. difficile, Streptococcus suis, Staphylococcus hyicus, and Erysipelothrix rusiopathiae. It is also effective against Gram-negative pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella spp., Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, and Fusobacterium necrophorum.

After intramuscular injection at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight in pigs:

  • Cmax = 4.17 ± 0.92 µg/ml
  • Tmax = 22.0 ± 12.2 hours
  • t1/2 = 49.6 ± 11.8 hours

Following absorption, ceftiofur is rapidly metabolized into desfuroylceftiofur.

Usage

Administer intramuscularly in the neck behind the ear as a single dose of 1 ml per 20 kg body weight (equivalent to 5 mg Ceftiofur/kg body weight). Do not inject more than 2 ml per site. For pigs > 40 kg, divide the dose into multiple injection sites.

Note: Shake well before use.

Recommendations

Do not use concurrently with bacteriostatic antibiotics such as Tetracyclines, Macrolides, Lincosamides, or Chloramphenicol.

USE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:

Studies in mice show no reproductive toxicity (teratogenicity, abortion). However, safety for pregnant or lactating sows and breeding pigs has not been thoroughly studied.

OVERDOSE:

Ceftiofur has very low toxicity in pigs; overdose does not cause adverse symptoms.

Contraindications

Do not use in animals with a history of hypersensitivity to the product’s components.

Side effects

Occasionally, mild swelling may occur at the injection site.

Expiry date

Unopened product: 24 months.

Opened product: Use within 30 days after the first dose is withdrawn.

Storage

Store in a dry, cool place at ≤ 30°C.
