Cefquino Cefquino
Ingredient

In 1 ml of suspension:

  • Cefquinome sulfate …………… 29.64 mg (equivalent to 25 mg Cefquinome)
  • Solvents and excipients …………... 1 ml
Uses

Treatment of respiratory infections (pasteurellosis, pneumonia-pleurisy, polyserositis, streptococcosis), arthritis, and dermatitis in cattle, buffalo, and pigs. Also used to treat MMA, hemolytic E. coli, hoof infections, and typhoid.

Pharmacological properties

Cefquinome is a bactericidal antibiotic of the fourth-generation cephalosporin group, with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and high efficacy against pathogens such as:

  • Respiratory infections in pigs: Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Streptococcus suis, and Haemophilus parasuis.
  • Respiratory infections in cattle: P. multocida, Haemophilus somnus, and Pasteurella haemolytica.
  • Hoof infections: Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus.
  • Acute metritis: E. coli, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Corynebacterium spp.

Pharmacokinetics:

  • In cattle: After intramuscular injection at 1 mg/kg body weight, Cmax = 2.85 ± 1.11 µg/ml, Tmax = 2 hours, and half-life = 11.5 ± 2.57 hours.
  • In pigs: At 2 mg/kg body weight, Cmax = 4.62 ± 0.31 µg/ml, Tmax = 0.38 ± 0.14 hours, and bioavailability = 103.04 ± 13.01%. Only 14% of Cefquinome binds to plasma proteins and is primarily excreted through urine.
  • In poultry: At 2 mg/kg body weight, Cmax = 3.04 ± 0.71 µg/ml, bioavailability = 95.81 ± 5.81%, and half-life = 1.35 ± 0.20 hours.
Usage

Intramuscular injection. Shake well before use.

  • Cattle and buffalo: 1 ml/25 kg body weight (1 mg Cefquinome/kg body weight) for 3–5 consecutive days. For mastitis, inject for 2 consecutive days.
  • Pigs, calves, and young buffalo: 1 ml/12.5 kg body weight (2 mg Cefquinome/kg body weight) for 3–5 consecutive days. For MMA, inject for 2 consecutive days.

Overdose:
Doses of up to 20 mg/kg body weight in cattle and 10 mg/kg body weight in pigs are well tolerated.

Withdrawal Period:

  • For meat consumption:
  • For milk: ½ day.
Recommendations

Do not use concurrently with bacteriostatic antibiotics such as Tetracyclines or Phenicols.

Contraindications

Not for use in animals with a history of hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics.

Not for animals weighing less than 1.25 kg.

Not for use in poultry (including laying birds) due to the risk of antibiotic resistance in humans.

Side effects

Pain at the injection site may occur.

Use During Pregnancy and Lactation:

  • No evidence of adverse effects on reproduction (e.g., teratogenicity or abortion) in pigs.
  • Safe for use in pregnant and lactating cattle.
Expiry date
  • Unopened product: 24 months.
  • After first use: 30 days.
