الخواص الدوائية للدواء

Iron dextran is a complex of Fe(OH)₃ and dextran with a molecular weight of 5,000–7,500. Iron is essential in treating anemia, and iron deficiency is a major cause of anemia.

After intramuscular injection, the drug is absorbed via the lymphatic system: about 60% of the dose is absorbed within 3 days, and 90% within 1–3 weeks. Most absorption and transport of dextran iron from the injection site to the lymphatic system are handled by macrophages. Some dextran iron may remain around the connective tissues near the injection site and is absorbed slowly over several months.
Once absorbed, dextran iron rapidly enters the bloodstream via the lymphatic system and is gradually taken up by cells in the reticuloendothelial system (liver, spleen, bone marrow). Iron is released from the dextran complex, and dextran is either metabolized or excreted. Iron immediately binds to proteins such as hemosiderin, transferrin, or ferritin. Iron can cross the placenta, though the exact form is unknown. Only a small amount is excreted through milk.
Iron is not completely eliminated from the body. Free iron from hemoglobin breakdown is reused by the body, with only small amounts lost through hair and nail growth, skin shedding, and gastrointestinal mucosal turnover. Iron accumulation can occur with repeated doses, with minimal excretion via feces, bile, or urine.

Vitamin B12 is crucial for DNA synthesis. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 inhibits the maturation and division of cell nuclei, leading to anemia.

الاستخدام

Administer subcutaneously or intramuscularly:

Calves, buffalo calves: Inject 4–8 ml per animal subcutaneously during the first week of life.
Piglets: Inject 1 ml per piglet intramuscularly at 3 days of age.

WITHDRAWAL PERIOD: Not required.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Do not use concurrently with other oral iron supplements.

USE DURING PREGNANCY:
High doses increase the risk of teratogenicity and fetal toxicity.

Do not use in animals with kidney infections.

Do not use simultaneously with tetracyclines due to interactions between iron and tetracyclines.

In pigs, iron injections may occasionally cause reactions such as exhaustion, muscle weakness, vomiting, fever, and abscesses at the injection site. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions or sudden death may occur after injection.
