Uses

For treating respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in cattle, buffalo, and pigs, such as pneumonia, pleuropneumonia (APP), pasteurellosis, unknown fever, E. coli infections, typhoid, and enteritis diarrhea.

Pharmacological properties

Florfenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of polypeptide chains between amino acids. This inhibits protein synthesis, thereby halting bacterial growth and survival.

Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against:
Pasteurella multocida, P. haemolytica, Haemophilus somnus, E. coli, Salmonella choleraesuis, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, M. hyorhinis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Corynebacterium pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Klebsiella spp., Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Citrobacter spp., Bacillus cereus, and Flavobacterium spp.

It is particularly effective against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, and Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica.

In cattle: Following intramuscular injection at a dose of 20 mg/kg, Cmax = 3.37 µg/ml, Tmax = 3.3 hours.
In pigs: Cmax = 3.8–13.6 µg/ml; Tmax = 1.4 hours.
Florfenicol concentrates in lung tissue and plasma, undergoes extensive metabolism, and is excreted in urine.

Usage

Cattle and buffalo: Subcutaneous injection at 1 ml per 15 kg body weight (20 mg florfenicol/kg body weight).
Pigs: Intramuscular injection at 1 ml per 20 kg body weight (15 mg florfenicol/kg body weight).
Note: Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

OVERDOSAGE:
In pigs, doses over 3x the recommended level may cause reduced appetite and dehydration; 5x the dose may cause vomiting.

WITHDRAWAL PERIOD:

For meat consumption:

Pigs: 14 days
Cattle and buffalo: 30 days

Not for use in dairy cattle producing milk for human consumption.

Recommendations

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
No documented studies on drug interactions.

USE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Laboratory studies show no teratogenic or fetal toxicity. However, safety in pregnant or lactating animals has not been thoroughly studied.

Contraindications

Not to be used in dairy animals producing milk for human consumption.
Not to be used in piglets weighing less than 2 kg.

Side effects

Mild diarrhea, slight swelling, rash around the anus and rectum.

Expiry date

2 years from the manufacturing date.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place at temperatures ≤ 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
